Hi Dan:
I found your blog this morning while surfing the web and after reading the Business Week article on artists making a living. Your quest sounds great and I loved your book list. Good luck with all that you are doing. Thank you for your words. As an artist that holds down a full time job and has a family it is hard and you are right, much of this I did not learn in art school. I will keep an eye on your blog. Thanks

Awesome! Thanks Kezia! One of the points of this whole thing is to educate myself. I guess the postal service makes their money the same way all the others do. Charging the customer for postage.

I think you're under the impression that the USPS is a government agency. It is extra-governmental (but inextricably tied to it...who else would mangle, I mean, examine, your packages and mail for anthrax and explosives to keep you safe?)

It is not supported by taxpayers except for being compensated for special mailings like election materials and a few other services it provides the government, such as in rural offices where there are no other government offices.

You aren't talking crazy, though. The USPS is fairly innovative when it comes to environmental responsibility - here's an example, their "cradle to cradle" packages:

Sure, private companies can deliver mail and packages too. Wal-Mart is so big it delivers its own junk mail. But you don't hear me applauding their initiative...

Hi Dan,

I really enjoyed your first blog post. I especially resonated with these lines.

"There is no definitive step by step because building a business is like writing a song. You must pay tribute to those that inspired you, but at the same time you have to create your own style. Your business is an extension of you, it’s a public representation of your morals, and values."

Looking forward to melding our two businesses and creating abundance together.

Best,
Gary
